"Journey into North America"
No one knew probably at the time what a historically and scientifically important
trip it would be, as on May 17, 1832 the German Prince Maximilian of Wied, his
Staff, the hunter and taxidermist David Dreidoppel and the young Swiss Artist Karl Bodmer
set out on their important journey, which finally made it into annals of History as "Journey into
North America. "
To explore and document the Native Americans
On May 17, 1832 the German ethnologist and naturalist Prince Maximilian zu Wied and the young Swiss Artist Karl Bodmer set out on a long and adventurous journey into the vast prairies of North America to explore and document the Native Americans.
From Prince Maximilian's Journal
Bodmer has represented the Indian nations with great truth and correct perseption of their characteristic features. His drawings will prove an important addition to our knowledge of this race of men, to whom so little attention has been paid.
The indulgent reader, following the author beyond the frontier of the United States, to those extensive plains and cheerless, disolate prairies, where many tribes of the aborigines still enjoy a peaceful dwelling while their brothers in the eastern part of the continent are displaced or degenerated by the ever-increasing immigration and pushed across the Mississippi where they have for the most part perished.
Prince Maximilian, the battle at Fort McKenzie
"On the 28th of August, at break of day, we were awakened by musket-shot. When we entered the court-yard of the fort, all our people were in motion."
"They had cut up the tents of the Piékanns with knives, fired their guns and arrows at them, and killed or wounded many of the Indians, roused from their sleep by this unexpected attack. Four women and several children lay dead near the fort, and many others were wounded. The men, about thirty of them, had partly fired their guns at the enemy, and fled to the gates of the fort, where they were admitted."
"If the enemy had occupied the heights on the other side of the river, from that position they might have killed all our people in the fort. The Indians were shooting rather bad; later we found out that the Assiniboins had three men dead and 20 were severly injured."
